What do we know about counter weighting?

In late 2004 butt weighting driver testing was conducted:

Testers at all levels of competence were included.  The results showed improvment in performance: More distance and better direction accuracy.

Some explanations and observations included:

-          As golf club static weight was reduced by lighter shafts and grips, many golfers lost club feel and weight addition was needed to improve swing dynamics

-          Counter balancing restores the feel needed to maintain swing plane and to more easily feel the golf club

-          Counter balancing increases total weight of the golf club, moves club balance point closer to the grip, and slightly reduces head-weight feel of the club. Many golfers do not feel any change

-          Butt-weighted shafts were tried but limited because it was one weight fits all

-          Counter balance weights provides for a substantially higher mass in the butt and locates the mass in a more extreme location right at the very end of the grip plus now the fitter has weight options

-          In many instances, golfers see an improvement in swing speed, ball speed, swing path, distance, feel, and clubface at impact.

-          Not all golfers will improve with counter balancing, so it is up to the club fitter or individual golfer to test for improvement.

-          Early to Midway Release—these golfers might be able to increase their swing speed, therefore increasing their ball velocity from counter weighting. Also, swing path and face angle at impact might also improve

-          Outside-To-Inside Swing Path—by placing more weight under the hands, this type of golfer might improve their swing path considerably. With today’s lighter clubs, when more weight is put under the hands, it is more difficult for the golfer to “Cast” the club outward and easier for them to “Drop” the club into the slot. We have seen a 50% improvement in a few golfers with Out-to-In swing paths. Their final swing path may remain Out-to In, however, now they play a controllable fade instead of a big slice.

-          When testing for Length—Golfers whose on-center hits are very close but just not quite on-center. These golfers usually will benefit from testing with counter weights. Usually, a lower weight such as 20g just might be the ticket for this type of golfer to hit on-center

Testing of golfers at all levels of expertise shows that counter weighting (some call it back weighting and others optimal weighting) improves performance: Longer and straighter drives and fairway clubs, better iron distance and direction control, improved wedge accuracy and all show more consistency and repeatibility! The Tour Lock Pro counter weighting system is the most professional product on the market: the design simplifies custom fitting and installation and is the most affordable. The Tour Lock Pro weighting system conforms with the USGA and the R&A Rules of golf and the weights fit shafts with I.D. between .495" & .600".

New Product Line: Tour Lock Power Weights and Installation Tool. These are the first of a kind; clubfitters and golfers can add weight down the shaft in various positions creating changes in the release dynamics of golfclubs thus improving the golfclub Optimal Weight. Total club parameter changes such as the following may be made:

     - Adjustment to the swing MOI
     - Club weight without changing the Swing Weight
     - Once installed club balance point without changing the over all club weight
     - Once installed club swing weight without changing the club over all weight
     - Eliminates the need for adjustable weight club heads
     - Permits simple golfclub optimal weight adjustments using only the upper part of the golf club
